i hate tea but maybe i should consider this….
I should start drinking green tea even though it tastes like shit.
wow im gonna start drinking green tea more often..
If your green tea tastes bad you are brewing it wrong or using bad tea.
Properly-brewed green tea made with quality leaves is delicious, refreshing, and subtle in taste. You need to use whole leaves and use warm—not boiling!—water. Bagged tea at the supermarket is low-quality tea, including literal floor sweepings from when better tea is processed. Crushing tea makes it taste worse, the crushed leaves don’t infuse properly.
Beyond that, I can almost guarantee you’re either scorching or oversteeping your tea. Green tea should be brewed with water between 165 and 170 degrees fahrenheit. It should be warm enough for steam to be visible, but not so hot you can’t comfortably stick a finger in. If you’re not sure your water’s the right temperature, get a cheap meat thermometer from the supermarket and use it exclusively for tea, when it’s chicken temperature, you can add your leaves.
Green tea should only be brewed for one to two minutes. Any longer and it releases chemicals that make it bitter. Set a stopwatch if you need to, and strain it right away.
Don’t use teabags or infuser balls. They don’t give leaves enough room to infuse.
There’s a number of places online where you can buy good tea. Teavana, The Tao of Tea (which also has a number of herbs for delicious tisanes!), The Tea Table, and Adagio Teas are some of my personal favourites, and they all sell equipment too, including single-cup tea infusers. Teavana also sells tea through Amazon, and Amazon has a decent selection of single-cup size infusers (just remember to get a large basket-shaped one, not a ball strainer).
Get decent tea and enjoy it! Don’t force yourself to choke down subpar tea just because it’s good for you. :(
Reblogging for the tea info lol. Erica I hope you see this!
